Race, equal opportunity and diversity governance is integral to all aspects of the performance and a core corporate strategic activity of Avon and Somerset Police Authority and police service.
As part of its continued commitment to equality and diversity, the Authority has set up a diversity working group to look at and report to the Police Authority on all aspects of race and diversity as well as meeting with representatives of organisations such as the Black Police Association (BPA) and the Independent Advisory Group (IAG).

A principal aim of the Government’s Police Reform Programme is to provide a citizen-focused service, responding to the needs of individuals and communities and inspires confidence in the police service. Race Equality Scheme 2005-08
The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a statutory General Duty on every Police Authority including Avon And Somerset Police Authority to: eliminate unlawful racial discrimination; promote equality of opportunity; promote good race relations between people of different racial groups.
In addition to the General Duty, the Act also sets out a Specific Duty for public authorities which includes Police Authorities. As part of this Specific Duty the Police Authority must prepare and publish a Race Equality Scheme (RES), demonstrating how it will promote race equality in each of the Authority’s roles and functions including the monitoring of Avon and Somerset Police.
It is important to point out that the Avon and Somerset Police Authority Scheme is wholly independent of the Avon and Somerset Police RES, although it does share the same underlying values.
