HRH Princess Anne opens new flagship police station (31st October 2012)

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal officially opening The Bridewell

Today, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal officially opened Avon and Somerset Police's flagship police station 'The Bridewell' at a grand opening ceremony in Bristol City Centre.

Princess Anne officially opened the building by unveiling a plaque and met with officers and staff who are based at the station.

Police Authority Chair Dr Peter Heffer said: "I am delighted to see The Bridewell officially opened, it is clear to see from everyone here that this building has been built with the needs of the community and our partners firmly in mind. This new building highlights the Police Authority's commitment to making sure this police service has facilities fit for purpose now and in the foreseeable future. I am sure that both the public and police officers and staff will benefit from this new flagship police station."

Chief Constable Colin Port said: "We are honoured to have Her Royal Highness here with us today to officially open our state-of-the-art police station. The work which goes on day-in-day-out within this building is an example of modern policing in action.

"At The Bridewell Police officers and staff work together with probation, mental health, council workers, the prison service and criminal justice professionals under one roof. All supported by our private-sector partners South-West One. As a result we are able to be more effective at what we do and provide a better and more cost-effective service to the public. This is the future of policing in Britain."

The Bridewell has increased the visibility and presence of the police in the city centre of Bristol and also provides a far more accessible and welcoming front office to the public.

The new building provides a flexible space to work in with high-tech equipment. The Bridewell houses staff from Avon and Somerset Probation Service, IMPACT (a multi-agency team managing the city's most problematic acquisitive criminals), IRIS (a multi-agency team who manage violent offenders) neighbourhood policing teams, response teams, the dangerous offenders unit and a number of criminal justice teams.
