Welcome to Avon and Somerset Police Authority

Radical changes to the way that the police are governed and held to account have been proposed by the Government.

A consultation document “Policing in the 21st Century: Reconnecting Police and the People”  has set out a new model for accountability one single elected Police and Crime Commissioner.

This means the day to day influence of 17 people representing their communities and council will be replaced by one elected person. There are a number of concerns about this proposed model including the ability of one individual to fully represent all 1.6 million people within Avon and Somerset, the cost implications of an election campaign, the ‘party politicisation’ of policing and potential interference with the professional judgement of police officers.

We would like to know what you think about the proposals. If you would like to share your views please take part in our quick survey.
